On this day in 1861, Kansas joined the Union as a free state. It was admitted as the 34th state to join the Union. Opposing pro and anti-slave forces in Kansas has been a major factor in the eruption of the Civil War.

Mary Holste of Kansas, born in 1888, hand pieced this Fan quilt in the 1940’s. It was documented by the current owner as part of the Kansas Quilt Project.
