On this day in 1971, Apollo 14, piloted by Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell and Stuart Roosa is launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on the third U.S. mission to the moon. Apollo 14 returned safely to Earth on February 9 with 96 pounds of lunar samples collected by the astronauts.
Ann Johnson Armstrong (1865-1930) of Hickman County in western Kentucky made this “Full and Change of Moon” quilt between 1876-1900. The quilt was documented during the Kentucky Quilt Project.
