On this day in 1953, French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau published his famous book, “The Silent World” about the hidden universe of undersea creatures. A film version was released in 1956 that was a winner at the Academy Awards and the Cannes Film Festival.

Dorothy Lou Hicks (1883-1971) of Sevier County, Tennessee hand pieced and hand quilted this Ocean Wave String quilt around 1940. Its owner, who received the quilt from the maker’s sister, documented the quilt as part of the Quilts of Tennessee project.
